"I’ve been surprised and encouraged by how much I’ve continued to benefit from remote Alexander technique instruction. With the familiar sound of Flora’s voice and no physical contact, it has been an exciting opportunity to experience how our mind and attention can fill in some of the gaps with visualization and felt sense. With Flora’s support, these conditions have challenged me as a student to strengthen these capacities in new, more creative ways." Mike E., July 2020
"How does one practice a technique that is dependent on touch, virtually? Initially, the concept of an online Alexander Technique session had me feeling skeptical. However, despite a screen separating us, Flora is able to guide and teach with ease and confidence. I leave the session re-aligned, re-centered and re-energized; feelings I consistently have after in-person classes.
As a student, I often find myself quite reliant on Flora's hands to evoke new sensory information, reveal old physical habits, and receive kinesthetic feedback. And while Alexander Technique advocates for dynamic engagement from the student, it can sometimes be easy to become passive when touched, wanting to allow the teacher's hands to lead and re-pattern. However, in order to gain the benefits of Alexander Technique through virtual teaching, I had to become a more active participant and seek out alternative methods of learning without the use of my teacher's touch.
Having 10-20 minutes at the beginning of class, dedicated to some sort of guided movement and meditation is extremely helpful. It calms my nervous system, amped up from the day, and allows me to be more internally focused.
Anatomical awareness has proved to be very valuable throughout class. As a visual learner, I really appreciate any image or skeleton that Flora uses to help me identify and understand a body landmark. Learning to touch, trace and recognize the landmark(s) on my own body was also more informative than I had anticipated.
While I miss the magic of touch (and particularly Flora's!) I feel as though I am cultivating new skills that can only serve to deepen my understanding of this practice." Aviva K., August 2020
"Taking Alexander Technique lessons online with Flora has allowed me to benefit as much as I’ve benefited from in-person lessons.
Through guidance via video and her voice, I’ve found myself able to release muscle tension and restore natural movement patterns that were previously causing me tension. One example has been a guided audio lesson while walking, which has allowed me to move with better form and ease, and has carried over into approaching running with an improved quality of movement.
My experience being guided by visuals and voice has proven to be as effective as touch. As a result of ongoing online lessons I’ve continued to develop mental tools that allow me to recognize and let go of painful movement/postural habits, increasing my mobility and allowing me to return to activities such as running and playing music.” Aamir M., June 2020
