Alexander Technique

In the book "Body Mechanics" written by medical doctors Goldthwait, Brown, Swain and Kuhns, (1952 edition), Chapter 1 "The Problem of Chronic Illness", it states:

"
An individual is in the best health only when the body is so used that there is no strain on any of its parts.  This means that, when standing, the body is held fully erect, with no strain on the joints, the bones, the ligaments, the muscles or any other structures.  There should be adequate room for all the viscera, so that their function can be performed normally unless there be some congenital defect."

In a very unique and effective way, the Alexander Technique provides the tools to keep an individual in best health.  It teaches the skill to observe and handle yourself with more ease and wisdom.  By studying with a teacher, you can better understand the unconscious attitudes in the way you move, think and carry yourself, and how these attitudes and believes directly influence the way you feel and act.  Your health is directly linked to the way you use yourself, and you can change it if you want.

Relief and Prevention

Clinical studies have shown that the technique improves breathing capacity and posture and can be a long term relief for those who are suffering from a variety of neurological and musculo-skeletal
problems, including:

  • neck and back pain
  • traumatic and repetitive strain injuries
  • chronic pain and arthritis
  • breathing and coordination disorders
  • stress related disorders and migraines
  • painful joints and bones
  • depression and anxiety

Preventing further misuse due to poor postural habits is an ultimate skill you will learn when taking lessons.

Chronic Pain Management

Injury or the effect of stress can lead to chronic pain.  The body usually adapts very well to changes and often we are unable to tell if the pain is due to an injury or the effect of stressful habitual behavior.  Lessons in the technique can lead to the understanding of the cause of chronic pain.

British Back Pain Study

Randomized Controlled Trial of Alexander Technique Lessons, Exercise, and Massage (ATEAM) for Chronic
 and Recurrent Back Pain
.
Little P et al (2008). British Medical Journal 337:a884.
In this study, 579 subjects with chronic and recurrent back pain were randomized to receive massage, six Alexander Technique lessons, 24 Alexander Technique lessons, or no intervention. In addition, half of the subjects were encouraged to walk regularly. A year later, the group with no intervention had 21 days of pain per month. The group with massage had 14 days of pain per month. The group with six Alexander Technique lessons reported 11 days of pain per month, and the group with 24 Alexander Technique lessons reported three days of pain per month. There were no adverse effects.

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING

"Flora is an expert on posture and movement. She quickly identified where my posture was creating tightness and imbalance in my movements. She is patient but committed to helping teach her students and is an absolute pleasure to work with."

- Cheryl K.

"Flora's lasting gift was that she gave me an internal feel for what proper alignment feels like and it feels really good.  [...] When I walk aligned there is a mindfulness that I feel that makes me more relaxed and balanced so even in chaotic crowds I feel a kind of peace.  It is a wonderful feeling and she taught me how to cultivate that.  Also Flora meets you where you are - whatever it is you want to work on - she can help you and structures the lessons accordingly."

- Patsy W.

"Going to Flora felt like I was in the hands of a master. Whereas so many before had failed me (numerous chiropractors and body workers), I could tell that Flora would be able to help me. The chronic pain I've experienced intermittently since I was 13 is gone, something no chiropractor I saw could achieve. But the Alexander Technique is more than just relief from pain, it teaches the joy of being in and using the body."

- Louis B.

"Flora is fantastic!  She has amazing energy and focus and is helping me learn how to find spaciousness in my spine.  I've been looking for this kind of help with my posture for years and am so happy to have found her.  She has my highest recommendation!"

- Valerie F.
